Hubert Weber Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Score: 92

Province: Mendoza

Grapes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Aging: 10% aged 12 months in French and American oak

An edge tinted brick red and a whiff of funk are more often the hallmarks of an old Bordeaux than a Mendoza cabernet, yet this one would hold its own with a St. Julien any time. In true Old World style, the flavor tends more towards red berries than jammy dark fruit, and there’s only a tiny touch of sweetness. The tannins offer plenty of structure, and the finish is long but clean, with an unusual final note of green apple.

Score: 90

Province: Mendoza

Grapes: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Malbec

Aging: 12 months in French and American oak

Hubert Weber brings out some unusual and wonderful flavors in this brick-red, Old World, Argentine blend, from the mix of plum, orange blossom, and bamboo in the bouquet to the water chestnut mingling with gooseberry and stone fruit in the mouth. A finely structured wine that is not overpowering – worth savoring!

Hubert Weber Merlot 2006

Score: 89

Province: Mendoza

Grapes: 100% Merlot

Aging: 10% aged 12 months in French and American oak

Swish this deep garnet-red wine in a glass, and the pungent aromas of rose and hibiscus will reach you even from a foot away. Come closer and you’ll feel the hint of funk as well. This is a far cry from the cheap Californian merlots of the 1990s and the rustic Patagonian merlots that used to sell for a few bucks a bottle. The flavors are light at first, with a restrained mix of red berries and citrus notes, but rich prune arrives with some airing – and the finish is long enough to merit more contemplation.

Hubert Weber Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Score: 88

Province: Mendoza

Grapes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Aging: 2 years in French and American oak

A wine of contrasts, with an intensely perfumed nose of vanilla and spices, then somewhat austere, almost citrus-like flavor backed by strong tannins. Needs a bit of time to breathe, then offers an intriguing alternative to the typical cabernet experience.

Hubert Weber Malbec 2007

Score: 88

Province: Mendoza

Grapes: 100% Malbec

Aging: 10% aged 12 months in French and American oak

Light funk mixes with classic malbec ink and a wash of plum in the bouquet, paving the way for a very distinct kind of malbec: bright and sweet like hard candies, coating the mouth easily, and with a clean finish. All in all, more reminiscent of Patagonian malbecs than many others from Mendoza, and conspicuously well crafted.
